LADY LONGHORNS DONATE TIME TO BETTER THEIR COMMUNITY
The United volleyball program used Sunday to clean up the Bartlett Park Soccer Complex. The event was organized by Chano Aldrete, a local chef who is passionate about beautifying the City of Laredo, who teamed up Keep Laredo Beautiful and the Longhorns’ volleyball program.
“This is our way to give back to the Laredo community,” Aldrete said. “We wanted this generation to connect with their environment. Hopefully we can inspire other schools and other businesses to adopt a park. When people read that the United volleyball girls did this, maybe the Alexander girls adopt North Central Park. We want to be the tipping point that we start this movement in Laredo that has been going on for years.”
The Lady Longhorns’ entire volleyball program, including the coaching staff and a few parents, spent four hours picking up trash around the park, planting magueys, cleaning up the landscape and putting gravel down in certain locations.
“We are just helping the City of Laredo, and this is for the community,” United head coach Lety Longoria said. “We have great facilities and parks in Laredo and we just need to take care of them. I am very proud of the girls wanting to be part of this community project. They were out here helping, cleaning and planting for four hours. This is just not about the United girls, but they were excited to come out here and help out.”
